Meet Liberty (more affectionately known a Lovely Libby), the rescue rottweiler with a tail.

October 3, 2001, it happened. That moment in rescue when THE dog falls into your lap, turns you upside down and forces you to do more than you thought you could. Something indefinable occurs, a spark ignites. That spark creates a fire that you willingly dive into, getting scorched along the way, but knowing that you can't turn away, that you need to see it through, regardless of the cost. Like a moth , you are drawn to that irresistible light, not knowing why, only that you must. That spark flared when Libby, a rottweiler puppy entered my life.

Liberty's actual birth date is unknown but it was somewhere around the last weeks of June, 2001, and her beginning in life was not easy. Living outdoors, she was on her own, fending for herself as best she could. Her leg was broken and left to heal. Her first 13-14 weeks were spent outside. Then she came to me. The following 4-6 weeks (after surgery on 10/5) were an experience that brought some extraordinary people into my and Libber's lives.

Take a peek at  Lovely Libber's progress from then until now. And then, if you want to read a story of how a journey of two became a road traveled with many, click on Liberty's Journey. It's an amazing story of  strangers brought together to save the life of one little broken rottweiler puppy.  As Libby and I started our journey together, many people joined us; most I never knew BL (Before Libby). They became "Libby's Friends," a group I wrote to regularly about our adventures together. They walked along our sides as we traveled down our path together. Some of them flew above and beside us, moving heaven and earth, guarding and directing us when we weren't sure which turns to make. They laughed with us, cried with us, coaxed us on when times got tough and cheered with every victory, no matter how small. They donated money to help with her expenses, sent Libby presents. We wouldn't be where we are today, without them- Libby's Guardian Angels. Some of them were with us from day one; one of them named her; others joined us along the way. No matter when or where they joined us, our passage would not have been the same without them, sharing our journey. Because of them AND Libby I have the opportunity to "Pay It Forward." In the span of 4 short months I was given so much by these people and this extraordinary rottie girl.

Liberty's story is an incredible one, and it is one that is repeated many times over. We occasionally read or hear about amazing stories , but more often than not, we don't. Daily, behind the scenes, ordinary people do extraordinary things to save a life discarded or abused. Libby's story is a tribute and a thank you to everyone who in any way ever became involved in rescue. On January 26,2002. Libby found her perfect, forever home. On that Saturday Libby and I took our final journey together. It was a bittersweet day, but far more sweet than bitter. I knew when I departed that I had kept the promise I had made to Libby the very first day I saw her. And it doesn't get any better than that. See and read why.

Take a quick glimpse below to see Libby's progress. Then click on Liberty's Journey and read our story: how one broken little pup brought strangers together.

Day One: October 3, 2001

Libby's right front leg had been broken about 2-3 weeks previously and left to heal on its own. It was smaller than the left, drawn up close to her body and was completely unusable.

She was oh, so sad and it showed in every way. Her coat was rough and dull; her ears were down; her tail didn't move much, except for an occasional, cautious little wag.

But it was her eyes that captured me. They were dead. No sign of the puppy that should be, that could be. Nothing. Not even a faint glimmer of hope.

Libby after Surgery

This is Libby two days after surgery was done to repair her break and save her leg. Her surgery was performed on October 5, 2001 by an extraordinary vet, Dr. Valentine. Although Dr. Valentine wanted perfection, the break was too serious and she had to settle for a "very well done," and a leg that would be fully functional, if not perfect. And it is.

Lovely Libber

This is Libby in November, 2001: bright-eyed, confident, ready for the world - and the new home she would eventually have. This was her campaign picture.

Lovely Liberty

This is Libby in 2002. She wore her bandana for the first time since leaving the Oxbow Crew and clearly she remembered it. Lovingly, this is called "Libby HaHa"

Beautiful Libby

Regal, elegant, exquisite and much loved in her forever home. She is a living example of "Love Heals All Things." It simply does not get any better than this.

Fun Day

Libby tried her paws at agility and.......

Flyball

Not bad for a little girl who almost lost her leg!
